SUMMARY:The New American Farmer: Immigration\, Race\, and the Struggle for Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Although the majority of farms in the United States have US-born owners who identify as white\, a growing number of new farmers are immigrants\, many of them from Mexico\, who originally came to the United States looking for work in agriculture. In The New American Farmer\, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern explores the experiences of Latino/a immigrant farmers as they transition from farmworkers to farm owners\, offering a new perspective on racial inequity and sustainable farming. She finds that many of these new farmers rely on farming practices from their home countries—including growing multiple crops simultaneously\, using integrated pest management\, maintaining small-scale production\, and employing family labor—most of which are considered alternative farming techniques in the United States. Minkoff-Zern argues that immigrant farmers\, with their knowledge and experience of alternative farming practices\, are—despite a range of challenges—actively and substantially contributing to the movement for an ecological and sustainable food system.

SUMMARY:Farmworkers on the Front Line with CATA - The Farmworkers Support Committee
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will focus on the historic exclusion of farmworkers and how it has been exacerbated by the pandemic. The Sankofa Series is a monthly webinar series sharing the wisdom from past NESAWG conferences to help change the food system. \nPresenters\nJessica Culley \nJessica Culley has been working with CATA since the year 2000\, starting as an intern and now working as CATA’s General Coordinator. She is responsible for coordinating CATA’s work throughout southern New Jersey\, southeastern Pennsylvania\, and the Delmarva Peninsula. Jessica is originally from Cumberland County\, Pennsylvania but has lived in the Philadelphia area for 20 years. In her former life\, she studied Environmental Science in Northwestern\, PA\, lived and worked in rural Honduras\, and studied massage therapy. Her favorite farm produce is a slice of watermelon on a hot day in July. \nEdgar Aquino-Huerta \nEdgar Aquino Huerta was born in Puebla\, Mexico\, in a small town called San Nicolas Tolentino. At the age of two\, his mother carried him over the border in search of better opportunities. He is the son of immigrant farmworkers\, and he always knew he wanted to create change when he grew up because of the corruption\, mistreatment\, and humiliation his mother went through. At the age of 13\, his mother got too ill and returned to Mexico for treatment because she could not afford to be treated in America. Edgar began working in the fields and packing houses over his summers to send money to his mother and for himself to survive as well. He became a farmworker and finally understood the poor conditions his mother faced. Luckily in 2012\, he was introduced to DACA and had the choice of working in a “normal” job during the summers or stay in the fields/packing houses. He chose the fields/packing houses because he saw its beauty and started a family with the people who raised him while his mother was away. After High School\, he attended community college and Rowan University to pursue a degree in film. He has become one of the many voices for his community through his story\, and CATA has allowed him to hear and share farmworkers’ unheard voices by doing outreach. \nHis favorite thing about working with CATA is helping farmworkers find their voice and encouraging them to use it because they have their own power. Edgar enjoys listening to their stories. They are heartbreaking\, inspiring\, and powerful. He knows he is an avenue to their stories. \nMeghan Hurley \nMeghan Hurley began working for CATA – The Farmworker Support Committee in 2012\, first as Communications Coordinator and currently as the Policy and Advocacy Organizer. She manages CATA’s community radio station and coordinates their advocacy work on local\, state\, and national issues impacting the immigrant community. Before starting at CATA\, Meghan spent two years living in Peru as a volunteer with the Good Shepherd Volunteer program working with youth and indigenous communities around Cusco. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Communication and a Master’s Degree in Global Development and Social Justice. \nKendra Prat \nKendra started as a Farmworker Organizer with CATA in August 2020. She has a background in community organizing and performance arts and graduated from New York University with a degree in Performance and Civic Engagement. She is currently a Philadelphia resident and is always looking for ways to use the arts (music\, theatre\, movement) to support building strong\, liberated communities and connections across social movements. \nOne of her favorite things about working with CATA is the focus on popular education. The notion that as a Farmworker Organizer\, she doesn’t show up to “help farmworkers.” She shows up to support workers’ reflections\, build conversations\, share skills and information\, and support their action plans!

SUMMARY:Regional Agritourism Strategies for Community Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:The International Workshop on Agritourism is presenting a free monthly series of Agritourism Gatherings: A virtual series for farm\, food\, and travel communities. The series brings together farmers\, researchers\, service providers\, tourism experts and many others to share their knowledge and experience from around the world. This gathering highlights how international regions as diverse as Canada\, Saudi Arabia\, and Georgia are using agritourism as a way to build resilience by celebrating agricultural history\, ecology\, and heritage. Hear how agritourism initiatives are key to sustaining rural economic development by allowing farmers to diversify their income\, regenerate communities\, and reimagine the future (and recovery) as travel trends shift during the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Presenters will share best practices and lessons learned from developing and implementing regional strategies around agritourism.

SUMMARY:Communicating for the Farm
DESCRIPTION:Montana State University Extension Pondera County and Purdue Extension – Bartholomew County are teaming up to provide a webinar series dedicated to helping agricultural producers improve their agriculture communication skills. Adriane Good\, from MSU Extension\, and Cora Carter\, from Purdue Extension\, noticed that many farmers and ranchers want to engage with the public and share their story but have difficulties doing so. This webinar series aims to help producers with that\, giving them the skills to communicate effectively and present themselves professionally online when engaging with a non-agricultural based public. \nThe series will start off with two scientific communication professors from Purdue\, Drs. Beth Forbes and Linda Pfeiffer leading two sessions on effective communication. The first\, on May 13\, will focus on media literacy and critical thinking. This session will help participants figure out where to find credible sources and how to verify the information you’re getting. The second session\, on May 20\, will discuss how to effectively communicate your points and engage with the people you’re speaking to. Beth and Linda are both part of the leadership team of College of Agriculture course at Purdue that helps students learn how to engage with the public on controversial issues. \nOn May 27\, participants will get a chance to practice these skills. Participants will be broken out into smaller groups and asked to practice by discussing common controversial practices in agriculture\, while remaining civil and professional. \nOur fourth session\, on June 3\, will feature Carrie Mess (@dairycarrie)\, a Wisconsin dairy farmer with a large social media following. Carrie has been using social media to connect with consumers for over 10 years and will help you learn how to craft your own story for social media. \nOn June 10\, Sara Hollenbeck of High Five Meats\, will discuss presenting yourself professionally online. It can be difficult trying to decide what you should share on social media to retain a sense of professionalism while still being authentic. Sara will help you figure that out\, drawing from her experience using social media to promote her local meat company. \nThe final session\, on June 17\, will be allowing you to put it all together! Once again\, participants will be broken out into smaller groups and given a chance to practice using all your new skills. Other MSU and Purdue Extension educators have volunteered to participate in discussion with class participants\, to give everyone a chance to communicate with all sorts of different people. \nEach week’s class will begin at 5 PM MST and last until 6 PM. The webinar series will be hosted via Microsoft Teams\, which will allow class participants to interact with each other between sessions. If you are unfamiliar with teams\, a video will be distributed to familiarize you with the software. The webinar series is free of charge. Registration can be accessed at puext.in/comm4farm\, please answer all the questions in the registration as these will help us tailor the program to the group that attends. For more information about the webinar series\, contact Adriane Good at 406-271-4054.
