SUMMARY:Digging into Research of Small-Scale No-Till Farming Systems
DESCRIPTION:Ecological Farming Association’s Dirt First Conversation Series continues with this session on where you can learn about the latest research in small-scale\, intensive\, minimal-disturbance\, ecological farming systems. Since 2017\, the Community Alliance with Family Farmers has been working with Singing Frogs Farm\, Hillview Farms\, and others\, to carry out on-farm research of the soil health impacts of their farming systems. At the same time\, the Bowles Laboratory at UC Berkeley has conducted a 3-year experiment looking at the effects of key practices of these farming systems. After several years of soil health data collection\, these two groups are now ready to discuss their respective research findings\, as well as their experiences working with rural and urban farmers who have implemented these farming systems.

SUMMARY:Organic Industry Human Capital Capacity Building
DESCRIPTION:The organic industry faces a shortage in well-qualified organic inspectors and reviewers. Given this issue\, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) is implementing an “Organic Industry Human Capital Capacity Building” initiative. The goal is to improve the oversight capacity of the organic industry by supporting and expanding the pool of qualified inspectors and reviewers. The initiative will support projects across the human capital pipeline\, from initial workforce development to creating resources for existing professionals. USDA issued a Request for Applications that invites proposals for projects aimed at organic inspector and reviewer workforce development\, recruitment\, and retention. NOP intends to fund multiple projects (approximately three to six total) with different organizations\, each of which may last no longer than one year.\nApplications are due by July 2\, 2021.
