DESCRIPTION:The Farm to Institution Midwest Summit will take place February 28 – March 2\, 2022\, featuring online sessions and in-person events to highlight how institutional investment in local food procurement strengthens communities.  Registration is free and all are encouraged to join these highly relevant conversations about the importance of robust regional food systems.  Sessions will be of particular interest to students\, local community\, government\, and higher education leaders\, and food producers. Through close collaboration between Ohio University\, Rural Action\, and Community Food Initiatives\, the FOWG has reduced many  barriers to institutional purchasing of locally grown produce and has increased equitable access to local food on campus.   \nInstitutional investment in local food is a critical part of building community resilience for many reasons\, one key reason being the number of individuals an institution serves.  Institutions have the power to offer considerable financial support for local food producers\, potentially inspiring future farmers while simultaneously influencing future consumers of local food\, ultimately creating systems-level change for our community. You will be provided tools and templates aligned with the Harmonized GAP standard. \nTrainers Trish Tripp and Lindsay Gilmour have many years experience and have helped hundreds of small-scale diversified farmers write food safety plans and achieve audit readiness. They will share their expertise in demystifying the daunting process of writing a food safety plan and interpreting the requirements of the Harmonized GAP standards. \nSome familiarity with food safety is a prerequisite for this training. This could be participation in a PSA Grower Training (FSMA Produce Safety Rule training) or an equivalent GAP training.\nThere will be homework assigned after each modules. Those who attend the entire webinar series will receive a certificate of completion. \nThis series is designed to be a learning opportunity for those seeking a career as an on-farm food safety coach\, for farmer advocates\, and others working to support and educate small-scale farmers on food safety.

Pero\, qué son los mesotúneles? \nLos mesotúneles son túneles cubiertos de tela de 3.5 pies de altura que actúan como barreras físicas para mantener a las plagas de insectos alejadas de cultivos como calabazas\, pepinos o melones. Sin embargo\, los mesotúneles también excluyen a los polinizadores y pueden interferir con el control de malezas\, por lo que esos problemas deben resolverse para hacer de los mesotúneles un sistema práctico. But what are mesotunnels? These structures are 3.5-foot-tall\, fabric-covered tunnels that act as physical barriers to keep insect pests away from crops like squash\, cucumber or melons. However\, mesotunnels also exclude pollinators and can interfere with weed control – problems that must be solved to make mesotunnels a practical system. Join Sharon Badilla-Arias as she shares her experience from field experiments and on-farm demonstrations\, as well as and farmers’ experiences with optimizing mesotunnel systems in organic cucurbit production. \nSharon Badilla-Arias is a master’s student in the Plant Pathology and Microbiology Department at ISU studying in Mark Gleason’s lab. SUMMARY:Considering Carbon: Understanding the Legalities of Soil Carbon Sequestration Contracts
DESCRIPTION:Corporate America’s pledge to reduce its carbon footprint is now trickling down to farmers and ranchers. A number of programs exist that offer to pay farmers to increase the carbon levels in their soil through no-till\, strip-till\, and cover cropping. In exchange for implementing these practices\, farmers agree to sell the carbon credits generated on their fields to third-party brokers\, who in turn sell those credits to industries looking to offset their emissions and reduce their carbon footprints. \nThese soil carbon contracts are unlike other contracts signed by farmers and ranchers\, and present new challenges and questions.  This webinar will examine these new soil carbon contracts and explain the challenges to widespread adoption.

DESCRIPTION:This April\, join the Wallace Center’s Food Systems Leadership Network for a virtual series dedicated to building our collective knowledge around policy and advocacy for food systems change. We’ll first be joined by Equity Advocates for two sessions that debunk the misconceptions around nonprofits and advocacy and offer tips for how to get started and stay involved.  The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition will then walk us through a Farm Bill 101 session as we gear up for the reauthorization of this critical piece of food systems legislation. The series will round out with a dynamic panel discussion featuring seasoned food systems policy leaders who will offer their learnings from decades of food systems advocacy and share their vision for its future. Read more about the full series here. \nSession 1: Using Advocacy to Build an Equitable and Sustainable Food System with Equity Advocates \nApril 5 from 1-2pm EST \nRegister here \nA useful 101 to get any advocate started! The community and systems-level changes in the food system that many of us are working towards requires public policy. This session will introduce you to the power of and need for advocacy\, including why nonprofit staff\, community leaders and food systems practitioners can and should be at the policy making table. We will explore the broad range of activities nonprofits can engage in to influence public policy as well as define and differentiate between legislative\, regulatory\, budgetary and legal advocacy. Finally\, the session will include a brief lay of the land in terms of key federal legislation that impacts the food systems and opportunities to engage in advocacy. \n  \nSession 2: Best Practices for Meeting with Elected Officials with Equity Advocates \nApril 6 from 1-2pm EST \nRegister here \nResearch shows that engagements with elected officials are an impactful and necessary piece of any organization’s or coalition’s advocacy strategy\, but many are intimidated or scared of meeting with policy makers. This training provides an overview of why meeting with elected officials is an effective advocacy strategy. Learn practical tips and skills to prepare advocates\, community residents and nonprofit leaders to engage policy makers at the city\, state or federal level. We will cover the how to’s- how to schedule\, plan for\, create impactful materials for\, and run a successful meeting with a policymaker or staffer as well as how to leverage these relationships to advance an organization and/or campaign goals. Participants leave with tips for a successful meeting\, as well as a sample scheduling email\, agenda\, talking points\, and thank you email to adapt for personal usage. \n  \nQ&A Session with Equity Advocates \nApril 7 from 1-2pm EST \nSpace to connect with the trainers to ask questions and troubleshoot challenges. DESCRIPTION:Join Plant Based Utah for Regenerative Healthcare: The Case for Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Improving Human Health\, a virtual lecture by Dr. Scott Stoll. Dr. Scott Stoll is the co-founder of the Plantrician Project and the Regenerative Health Institute. \nOur medical system is overburdened attempting to treat chronic diseases with pharmaceutical intervention. At the same time\, conventional farming systems rely on toxic inputs that degrade human health and prioritize crops low in nutritional value. With cancer rates and autoimmune diseases on the rise worldwide\, and only 60 years of topsoil left due to soil degradation\, we need a new path to improving human health. \nThe more we specialize\, industrialize\, monetize\, and consolidate agriculture and healthcare – the more we’ve moved away from our roots. Is the goal of farming not to support human life by giving us the food and nutrients our bodies require? Is the goal of healthcare and doctors not to make us well? Then how did farming become solely about efficiency and yields\, and healthcare about managing expensive disease? And what is the path forward? \nThis lecture will take an in-depth look at the ways farming and health are intertwined\, how our systems have deviated from a regenerative path\, and why regenerative organic agriculture is the key to improving our human health.

DESCRIPTION:Established in 1981\, the Farming System Trial (FST) of Rodale Institute is the longest running side-by-side comparison of organic and conventional grain production systems in North America. Knowledge generated by this trial has influenced farmers\, researchers\, and policy makers and facilitated the adoption of organic and regenerative agricultural practices in the U.S. and around the world. In this webinar\, Dr. Yichao Rui\, the Director of FST\, will comprehensively introduce the research conducted in the trial in the last 40 years\, and highlight the latest research findings since 2008\, when “no-till” and “tilled” comparison was introduced to both organic and conventional systems. \nRegister for the event here.
