DESCRIPTION:Hey Food Safety friends! In this 8 module webinar series we will take a deep dive into the process of coaching a farmer to write a customized food safety plan. You will be provided tools and templates aligned with the Harmonized GAP standard. \nTrainers Trish Tripp and Lindsay Gilmour have many years experience and have helped hundreds of small-scale diversified farmers write food safety plans and achieve audit readiness. They will share their expertise in demystifying the daunting process of writing a food safety plan and interpreting the requirements of the Harmonized GAP standards. \nSome familiarity with food safety is a prerequisite for this training. This could be participation in a PSA Grower Training (FSMA Produce Safety Rule training) or an equivalent GAP training.\nThere will be homework assigned after each modules. Those who attend the entire webinar series will receive a certificate of completion. \nThis series is designed to be a learning opportunity for those seeking a career as an on-farm food safety coach\, for farmer advocates\, and others working to support and educate small-scale farmers on food safety.

DESCRIPTION:Join Plant Based Utah for Regenerative Healthcare: The Case for Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Improving Human Health\, a virtual lecture by Dr. Scott Stoll. Dr. Scott Stoll is the co-founder of the Plantrician Project and the Regenerative Health Institute. \nOur medical system is overburdened attempting to treat chronic diseases with pharmaceutical intervention. At the same time\, conventional farming systems rely on toxic inputs that degrade human health and prioritize crops low in nutritional value. With cancer rates and autoimmune diseases on the rise worldwide\, and only 60 years of topsoil left due to soil degradation\, we need a new path to improving human health. \nThe more we specialize\, industrialize\, monetize\, and consolidate agriculture and healthcare – the more we’ve moved away from our roots. Is the goal of farming not to support human life by giving us the food and nutrients our bodies require? Is the goal of healthcare and doctors not to make us well? Then how did farming become solely about efficiency and yields\, and healthcare about managing expensive disease? And what is the path forward? \nThis lecture will take an in-depth look at the ways farming and health are intertwined\, how our systems have deviated from a regenerative path\, and why regenerative organic agriculture is the key to improving our human health.

As a member of the BC Eco Seed co-op\, WoodGrain farm’s “Short Season Seeds” produce high-quality seed\, with careful attention to isolation distances\, trait selection\, and genetic diversity (including open-pollinated and open-source seed). DESCRIPTION:“Join agricultural consultant and trainer Shane LaBrake at Dickinson College Farm to learn how to operate and maintain tractors safely and with greater skill and confidence. \n\n\nThis hands-on course is designed for aspiring and beginning farmers and has also proven valuable to seasoned professionals. \nDay one will be an on-farm classroom. We’ll discuss the history and uses of tractors\, review basic terminology and operating principles\, and take an up-close look at levers and pedals\, the three-point hitch and PTO\, and the front-end loader. We’ll also review the internal combustion engine\, compare gasoline and diesel engines\, and discuss tractor transmissions. Newcomers will have a chance to take a supervised turn at the wheel for some introductory tractor driving practice. \nDay two will be a hands-on primer lesson in do-it-yourself tractor maintenance. We’ll perform a variety of routine tractor maintenance chores that might include engine oil and filter change\, coolant change\, hydraulic-transmission fluid and filter change\, air filter replacement\, fuel filter replacement\, fan belt tension adjustment\, battery care\, and a range of other do-it-yourself tasks that are typically performed at regularly scheduled intervals. \nToo far to drive? We’re also offering this event in Western Pennsylvania. \nAbout the trainer:\nShane J. LaBrake managed three different CSA organic vegetable farm operations between 1994 and 2007. He has presented variations on this two-day course over 200 times. His workshops consistently garner rave reviews\, and Shane is continuously adjusting the curriculum to better serve a new generation of tractor jockeys. \nNotes\n\nThere will be a 45-minute lunch break each day. SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Decolonizing Philanthropy in the Food System with Suparna
DESCRIPTION:Starting in March 2022\, decolonial educator and immigrant mother\, Suparna Kudesia (also an FSLN Network Weaver and the Co-director of the Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive\, a.k.a CoFED) will be leading an informal “Lunch & Learn” conversation to discuss ways in which we can decolonize philanthropy in the food system. More info here. \nRegister here! \nThe Lunch & Learns will bring together FSLN members in an informal\, chill\, relaxed setting over lunch to chat about decolonizing philanthropy in the food system. We hope that by participating you’ll have a place to engage in dynamic conversation about capital in the food system\, hear from a diversity of perspectives\, and deepen your connections and relationships with FSLN members. \n \n  \n\nOptional prereading: https://www.whitesupremacyculture.info/\n\nThis will help give us a common understanding of the concepts of decoloniality and racial capitalism in the food system\nWe will explore different aspects of white supremacy culture (coloniality) in the food system and discuss antidotes to these (decolonizing approach) in our work in the food system\n\n\nEvery session will begin with a grounding exercise with talking about food (this will also be a space to share and tinker with fun recipes and our stories about food)\nThrough the telling of stories and sharing of food-based rituals\, we will begin having informal conversations about the ways in which coloniality infiltrates our food system and ways in which we can disrupt them\nThere will be a running Google Drive of resources provided to participants to enhance the learning experience\n\nWe’ll hold space twice a month for these conversations\, come as you can! Register here. \n\nWednesdays\, March 16 and 30 from 1-2pm CST\nWednesdays\, April 13 and 27 from 1-2pm CST\nWednesdays\, May 11 and 25 from 1-2pm CST

SUMMARY:Food & Climate Justice Online Seminar
DESCRIPTION:In this course\, instructors Grace Gershuny and Brian Tokar will offer a Social Ecology perspective on the background and potential of the climate and food justice movements to resist further damage from fossil fuels and agribusiness dominance\, while building ecologically harmonious and equitable food and energy systems that can restore soil health\, biodiversity\, and climate stability. \nEach segment will highlight the leadership of frontline communities in shifting the paradigm towards the fundamental principles of non-hierarchy\, direct democracy\, and unity in diversity. Case studies of particular projects will include video interviews and presentations by frontline advocates as well as recommended readings and other video and audio resources. \n\n\nThe course registration fee is $100\, payable here. A self-directed version of the course is available for $50 here.
