SUMMARY:Twin Oaks Queer Gathering 2022 ~ Louisa\, VA
DESCRIPTION:Quoted from the Eventbrite page: \n“What is this awesomeness?!? Join us for a weekend of queertranstastic fun\, learning\, workshops\, networking\, revelry\, and more! \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nWe’re back! After a two-year hiatus\, we’re excited to reconnect with our queer friends and allies 🙂 \nA couple important new things this year: \n1) All attendees must be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination! This is to help protect the high number of vulnerable people in the community. As this is an outdoor event\, masking will NOT be required\, but is respected for those who would like to take more precautions. Testing is also NOT required\, but is highly encouraged\, both before and after the event. Please stay home if you are feeling ill\, have recently been diagnosed with Covid-19\, or have had direct contact with a suspected or confirmed Covid-19 case. If you do not attend or need to leave early\, we will happily refund all or some of your registration fee. Even with these guidelines in place\, there is some risk of Covid-19 exposure\, so please consider this when deciding to attend this year. \n2) Travel stipends are available to BIPOC folks! Email us at queergathering@twinoaks.org to make a request 🙂 \nThe usual general info: \nWhat is this awesomeness?!? \nJoin us for a weekend of queertranstastic fun\, learning\, workshops\, networking\, revelry\, and more! This is our third year hosting the Queer Gathering at Twin Oaks Community in rural central Virginia\, and we invite you to come participate as an attendee\, workshop presenter\, and/or performer. The gathering will be a safe and supportive camping event for queer folks and allies of all ages to come together\, skill share\, make art\, build community\, dance\, and organize. \nThis is a participant-led/co-created event\, so while the organizing team will setup the event site and create a general schedule of activities\, the content is largely up to YOU! There is opportunity to lead a workshop\, DJ some of the dance party\, bring your instruments to jam\, offer an interest/identity-based meetup (BIPOC dinner\, non-binary lunch\, comic book breakfast\, etc)\, and more! Just let us know ahead of time at queergathering@twinoaks.org or post a card on the bulletin board when you get here! \nSharing Responsibility: \nIn our strongly individualistic society\, sharing and acting in community is an inherently radical act. It also keeps our costs low so that the conference is financially accessible to more people. Participants are asked to do at least one 2-hr workshift during the weekend. Some tasks include (but are not limited to): set-up\, registration\, childcare\, kitchen help\, cleaning\, and more. Please do your part in making this fabulous event possible! \nSliding Scale: \nWe suggest $80 to cover our costs for a whole weekend of camping\, food\, fun\, and community organizing. However\, we want to be as financially accessible as possible and are offering tickets on a sliding scale basis of $40-140. Please pay what you can! If you are experiencing extreme financial hardship\, you may purchase a work trade ticket for $20 and sign up for 2 work shifts instead of one. No one will be turned away for lack of funds! \nWant more information? Check out our main webpage twinoaksqueergathering.org or email us at queergathering@twinoaks.org” \n\nWhat/Who/Where is Twin Oaks? \n“Curious about our host\, Twin Oaks Community? Twin Oaks is an income sharing community of 96 adults and 10 children\, ranging from tiny tiny just born all the way up to 80-something year old power houses! We make hammocks and tofu to earn our “bread\,” as well as selling ornamental organic flowers\, indexing books and growing organic seeds. All work at Twin Oaks is valued equally\, and members contribute their weekly amount of required labor to the community in the ways that suit them best\, from planning parties to planting trees and anything in between. We have 465 acres of land that includes 9 residences\, a dining hall\, an art/activities building\, a tree house\, a river\, a pond\, and a sauna- in addition to the beautiful conference site. We grow most of our own produce on a 4 acre garden\, have a large herd of cattle for dairy and beef\, chickens for eggs and meat\, and take most of our meals together. Check out our website at www.twinoaks.org! Or\, to learn more about the many\, many intentional communities out there and search for one near you\, visit the FIC website.”

SUMMARY:Webinar: Reducing Tillage to Improve Soil Health and Organic Grain Production—Research Update of the USDA NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) Project
DESCRIPTION:Reducing tillage is a challenging yet rewarding task for organic farmers. Different from conventional farmers who spray herbicides\, organic farmers sometimes have to use frequent tillage to prepare the seed bed and/or to cultivate to control weeds\, compromising their full potential in building soil health. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Yichao Rui\, Principal Investigator\, and Annie Benson\, Research Technician\, will provide an update of 3 years’ research findings of the USDA NRCS funded Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) project “Innovations in Cover Crop-Based Organic No-till Systems”. The efficacy of innovative tools in terminating cover crops\, controlling weeds\, supporting yields\, and maintaining soil health will be discussed. The challenges and opportunities in reducing tillage intensity and frequency in organic grain production systems will be highlighted. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Information Sharing Call: Opportunities and Challenges in the LFPA
DESCRIPTION:The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service established the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement (LFPA) initiative last year — an unprecedented $400 million investment in local and regional food systems. As a refresher: the LFPA funds state and tribal governments to procure local and regional foods\, with an emphasis on “socially disadvantaged” producers\, and partner with community-based organizations\, food pantries\, and other partners to distribute fresh food to underserved communities \nThis is a big deal for the sector\, with implications for future federal procurement initiatives. With support from The Rockefeller Foundation\, Wallace Center is kicking off a new 2-year initiative to support the successful implementation of the LFPA\, and we want to hear from you! \nWallace Center will be hosting a pop-up call to bring together the broader community of LFPA implementers—that is the community-based organizations and businesses\, food hubs\, farmers associations\, nonprofits\, and food banks\, making it happen. Join this call to connect with people across the nation and learn how other states and tribal governments are organizing around the LFPA. During our time together you will be working in small groups to get a lay of the land\, share strategies\, discuss challenges\, identify TA needs\, and build a community of support. \nJoin us! Register Here! Tuesday August 23rd at 1:00 pm PDT/ 3:00 pm CDT/ 4:00 pm EDT

SUMMARY:Grant Writing is a Team Activity
DESCRIPTION:Are your current grant writing strategies sustainable? It was conceived as a gathering to interrupt racist\, capitalist\, colonialist\, and heteropatriarchal legacies in U.S. agriculture\, while building community and alternatives among queer farmers who might experience isolation in those intersecting identities. The gathering is for all queer folk who identify as current\, lapsed\, or aspiring farmers / agriculturalists of any kind! \n \nThis gathering is in rural Iowa\, primarily because it first emerged out of a group of friends who are located here and had capacity to host. The QFC is a largely outdoor\, scrappy on-farm gathering where attendees will be camping\, sharing food made by Blazing Star Eats (a queer Decorah based local food biz)\, and spending the days attending scheduled sessions including opportunities to make art\, get your hands dirty\, and offering and participating in workshops. \nWhile the hosts provide structural bones that shape the days\, all who attend co-create the space in some way. Our goal is to provide enough structure so that folks feel comfortable and held\, and enough spaciousness to match the needs of the specific folks gathered. Attendees help shape the QFC through their presence\, contributions to conversations\, skill and workshop offerings\, and the sheer magic that happens when queers converge.”

SUMMARY:Public Field Day: TOUR - Three Part Harmony Farm
DESCRIPTION:This event is geared towards Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. \n“Join the Farm Alliance of Baltimore’s Black Butterfly Urban Farmer Academy for an on farm field day! \n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nThis field day and farm tour will take place at Three Part Harmony Farm – a small-scale agroecological farm\, located on a 2-acre parcel in northeast Washington\, DC. They grow mostly vegetables as well as herbs and cut-flowers utilizing sustainable practices. Owner & operator Gail Taylor\, will give a tour of her efficiently designed operation highlighting her experiences with ag policy\, her CSA model and post harvest practices. \nThree Part Harmony Farm exists to grow food for people\, but it also exists in part to challenge our assumptions on how urban farms should look. It intentionally seeks to create a viable and just local food economy while at the same time dismantling racism and the ever present\, entrenched forms of oppression in that same food system. The core principles of the farm are: Food as Medicine. Food as Culture. Food for our Future. \nThis is an in-person workshop. Pre registration is required so we can plan accordingly. We suggest that attendees wear weather appropriate attire\, and closed-toed shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Be sure to bring a water bottle! There will be a hand washing station on site\, as well as extra masks\, waters\, hand sanitizer\, sunscreen & bug spray. \n\nDirections: 3122 4th Street NE\, Washington DC. The garden is accessible by metro\, bus\, bike\, walking etc. (if you bike\, bring your bike inside the property)\nParking: Parking is on the opposite side of the street\, in front of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Take care when crossing the street! *Please do not park in any neighboring parking lots.\nRestrooms: Porta-potty onsite with hand washing station\nOther notes: There is no seating available on site\nCancellation Policy: In the event that we need to cancel due to weather or unforeseen circumstances attendees will receive an email notification. Paying attendees will receive a refund.\nPre readings: We encourage attendees to browse their website and the articles shared here\nQuestions? Please contact programs@farmalliancebaltimore.org\n\nMore about the Speaker: Gail Taylor (she/ her/ hers) has lived in DC since 1999. She has worked as an organizer and social justice activist focusing on Latin America solidarity (internationally) and affordable housing issues (locally.) She has been farming organically since 2005. Three Part Harmony Farm is a project that was born out of a community-led visioning process that began in 2011. The desire to establish a production focused vegetable farm in DC to grow food for family\, friends and the surrounding community combined with Taylor’s background in activism and policy advocacy led to a three-year campaign\, “I Want DC to Grow.” This resulted in the passage of the DC Food Security Act of 2014\, also known as DCs Farm Bill which sets the stage for 3PH and others to grow commercially in the district. \nTaylor speaks regularly on food and farming issues and has been featured in The Washington Post in 2014 and 2015 for her role as a leader in the urban ag movement. In 2015\, she was featured as one of Fifty+ under 50: Innovative leaders transforming metro DC’s food system. She is a member of the Black Dirt Farm Collective.”
