SUMMARY:Armed to Farm: Sustainable Agriculture Training for Military Veterans
DESCRIPTION:The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is now offering a virtual version of its popular sustainable agriculture training program for military veterans. NCAT is moving the training online to make it accessible during COVID-19 restrictions. Veterans who want to attend the Virtual Armed to Farm training\, which will take place in six sessions during April and May\, can apply online now. \n  \nVirtual Armed to Farm will cover topics essential to farm success\, including business planning\, budgeting\, recordkeeping\, marketing\, and USDA programs\, as well as specific enterprise discussions. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and network with other beginning farmers from across the country. The training will also include breakout sessions for region-specific networking and resource-sharing. \n  \nVirtual Armed to Farm will include an engaging blend of interactive online instruction and video farm tours via Zoom. Participants will be expected to be involved in virtual activities\, complete assignments\, and interact with other attendees. NCAT Sustainable Agriculture specialists will teach the training sessions. Staff from partner organizations\, USDA agencies\, and experienced crop and livestock producers will provide additional instruction. \n  \nApplications are available at https://ncat.org/atf_virtu/ and are due by March 12\, 2021. \n  \nVirtual Armed to Farm topics will be applicable to all beginning farmers regardless of location in the U.S. Military veterans interested in farming are encouraged to apply. Spouses are welcome to participate as well\, but must submit a separate application. The number of participants will be limited to facilitate effective online interaction. The more they are restricted – for instance to a monoculture pasture or a feedlot ration for livestock or to ultra-processed foods for humans – the less they can sustain health.\n\nSecond\, liking for the flavors of foods is mediated by feedback from cells and organ systems throughout the body\, including the microbiome\, in response to nutritional and medicinal needs. Those needs are met by nutrients (energy\, protein\, minerals\, vitamins) and the thousands of compounds that diverse mixtures of plants produce (phenols\, terpenes\, alkaloids).\n\nThird\, mother is a transgenerational link to landscapes. Her knowledge – of what and what not to eat and where and where not to go to forage – is essential for helping her offspring get a start in life. Her influence begins in the womb (through flavors in her amniotic fluid)\, and continues at birth (through flavors in her milk) and when her offspring begin to forage (as a model for what and what not to eat).\n\nCollectively\, these processes enable the wisdom of the body to be manifest in animals that are locally adapted to the environments they inhabit.

Felicia Bell\, NCAT Agriculture Specialist\, will be hosting a conversation with Mrs. Earcine Evans\, founder and owner of Francis Flowers & Herbs Farm\, a biodynamic\, organic farm in Mississippi; Twila Cassadore of the San Carlos Apache Tribe and the Traditional Western Apache Diet Project; Kelsey Ducheneaux-Scott of the Intertribal Agriculture Council and DX Beef; and Milagro Berhane\, Senior Research Associate with Southern University\, and founder and co-owner of Greenhand Nursery. \nSustainable\, regenerative agricultural practices are not a new concept. The speakers in this discussion will explore the ways indigenous\, traditional cultures have been regenerating the land for centuries. These practices can play an important role in today’s agricultural system. Working together and learning from each other\, all land stewards can regenerate soil health in the U.S. and around the world.
