SUMMARY:BUILDING A FOOD SAFETY PLAN from Soil to Sale
DESCRIPTION:Hey Food Safety friends! In this 8 module webinar series we will take a deep dive into the process of coaching a farmer to write a customized food safety plan. You will be provided tools and templates aligned with the Harmonized GAP standard. \nTrainers Trish Tripp and Lindsay Gilmour have many years experience and have helped hundreds of small-scale diversified farmers write food safety plans and achieve audit readiness. They will share their expertise in demystifying the daunting process of writing a food safety plan and interpreting the requirements of the Harmonized GAP standards. \nSome familiarity with food safety is a prerequisite for this training. This could be participation in a PSA Grower Training (FSMA Produce Safety Rule training) or an equivalent GAP training.\nThere will be homework assigned after each modules. Those who attend the entire webinar series will receive a certificate of completion. \nThis series is designed to be a learning opportunity for those seeking a career as an on-farm food safety coach\, for farmer advocates\, and others working to support and educate small-scale farmers on food safety.

SUMMARY:2022 Winter Farminar Series: On-Farm Research Explores Cover Crops\, Manure\, Nitrogen & Returns
DESCRIPTION:Join Woody Van Arkel and Cameron Ogilvie as they share results of and experience with on-farm research at Woody’s farm. Research explored different cover crops in combination with manure applications and side-dressed nitrogen. Cover crops included cereal rye\, red clover and multi-species blends. Learn how on-farm research like this can help you consider net returns and not solely bushels per acre. \nLaurent (Woody) Van Arkel farms just south of Dresden\, Ontario. He has long been innovating with no-till and cover crops in his corn\, soybean\, wheat and sugar beet rotation. He is also partnering with federal researchers\, through Living Lab – Ontario\, to better understand the potential for perennial cover crops. \nCameron Ogilvie is the knowledge mobilization coordinator for Soils at Guelph\, a University of Guelph initiative to advance soil management by bridging gaps between farmers\, researchers and the public. He has a master’s degree in cropping systems and agronomy from the University of Guelph\, where he studied the impacts of cover crops (he prefers to call them “service crops”) on water and nutrient cycling. \nFarminars are webinars that are free and produced to help farmers learn about business and production issues that matter to them from the convenience of their homes. Learn more about Practical Farmers of Iowa. View previous Farminars here.
