SUMMARY:Woodland Conversion to Silvopasture Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:In this two part series\, join farmer and educator Steve Gabriel for a discussion about how a woodlot can be utilized responsibly for supporting livestock well being and productivity. Historically\, many farmers have put animals in the woods\, but often this results in exposed soil\, erosion\, and damage to trees. With intentional planning and best practices\, the right woodland can benefit from livestock integration and offer a place of shade\, shelter\, and forage during the hottest and coldest times of the season. These webinars will feature examples and some step-by-step approaches to transitioning a woodland into a site for grazing animals. \nRegister for Part 2 of the webinar series here.  View Part 1 here.

SUMMARY:BUILDING A FOOD SAFETY PLAN from Soil to Sale
DESCRIPTION:Hey Food Safety friends! In this 8 module webinar series we will take a deep dive into the process of coaching a farmer to write a customized food safety plan. You will be provided tools and templates aligned with the Harmonized GAP standard. \nTrainers Trish Tripp and Lindsay Gilmour have many years experience and have helped hundreds of small-scale diversified farmers write food safety plans and achieve audit readiness. They will share their expertise in demystifying the daunting process of writing a food safety plan and interpreting the requirements of the Harmonized GAP standards. \nSome familiarity with food safety is a prerequisite for this training. This could be participation in a PSA Grower Training (FSMA Produce Safety Rule training) or an equivalent GAP training.\nThere will be homework assigned after each modules. Those who attend the entire webinar series will receive a certificate of completion. \nThis series is designed to be a learning opportunity for those seeking a career as an on-farm food safety coach\, for farmer advocates\, and others working to support and educate small-scale farmers on food safety.

SUMMARY:2022 Winter Farminar Series: Mysteries Revealed: Organic Seed Production and How Growers Can Play a Part
DESCRIPTION:Seeds are a foundational piece of any successful farm\, but how much do you really know about the seeds you are planting? In this Farminar\, we will uncover some of the mysteries of the organic seed industry. Who is breeding new varieties\, how is the seed being produced and why do well-loved varieties get dropped? Perhaps most importantly\, we will discuss ways growers can engage with the variety development process to influence which crops and traits are actively being improved. \nAdrienne Shelton is a senior product specialist with Vitalis Organic Seeds. She earned a master’s degree in plant breeding and plant genetics\, and a doctorate in environment and resources\, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Adrienne is proud to have participated in the breeding and release of “Who Gets Kissed?\,” an open-pollinated sweet corn bred for and with organic farmers. Adrienne serves on the board of directors for the Organic Seed Alliance\, and has been engaged with the organic farming movement as a farmer\, organizer\, seed saver and researcher for over 20 years. \nFarminars are webinars that are free and produced to help farmers learn about business and production issues that matter to them from the convenience of their homes. Learn more about Practical Farmers of Iowa. View previous Farminars here.

SUMMARY:FSNE Winter Series #2: Building Multi-Racial Movements for Equity & Justice
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the second event in FSNE’s 2022 Winter Series\, bringing regional food system participants and aligned friends together to dig into our shared work\, learn together\, get inspired\, and deepen our connections to one another. Please come for part of all of this event. \nHear from our special guests about how we can advance racial equity and wellbeing in these challenging times\, what opportunities exist to advance equitable belonging and to make change across food\, farming\, and fishing sectors\, and how we can best direct our collective efforts. \nThe first part of this event (10:00 am to noon) will feature Dr. Eddie Moore\, Jr. and Debby Irving\, inspiration for FSNE’s version of the Racial Equity Challenge. Our “keychord” panel will also include special guests Katya Fels Smith and Tanya Tucker from the Full Frame Initiative in which you’ll gain valuable insights for your own work. \nThe second part of this event (12:30 to 2:30 pm) will be a participatory skill-building workshop led by Curtis Ogden of the Interaction Institute for Social Change and Karen Spiller\, UNH Haas Professor\, FSNE Ambassador\, and principle in KAS Consulting. The workshop will focus on tools and processes to advance work for racial equity and equitable wellbeing. \nAs we grapple with pandemic disruptions and political polarization\, reckon with emboldened white supremacy\, and face ever-growing challenges from the climate crisis\, the importance of standing firm in a commitment to racial equity and justice in our food system is growing. \n\nWhat does racial equity look like in our communities and institutions? \nHow can we advance multi-racial movements for justice and wellbeing? \nWhat are some of the opportunities we can lean into now?\n\nThis session will be held in English and will be recorded for later viewing. Facilitation by Karen Spiller and Curtis Ogden with support from the FSNE backbone staff at the UNH Sustainability Institute. \nHosted by: Food Solutions \nFor more information please visit: https://foodsolutionsne.org/event/fsne-winter-series-2-racial-equity/
