About this event
We’re back! After a two-year hiatus, we’re excited to reconnect with our queer friends and allies 🙂
A couple important new things this year:
1) All attendees must be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination! This is to help protect the high number of vulnerable people in the community. As this is an outdoor event, masking will NOT be required, but is respected for those who would like to take more precautions. Testing is also NOT required, but is highly encouraged, both before and after the event. Please stay home if you are feeling ill, have recently been diagnosed with Covid-19, or have had direct contact with a suspected or confirmed Covid-19 case. If you do not attend or need to leave early, we will happily refund all or some of your registration fee. Even with these guidelines in place, there is some risk of Covid-19 exposure, so please consider this when deciding to attend this year.
2) Travel stipends are available to BIPOC folks! Email us at [email protected] to make a request 🙂
The usual general info:
What is this awesomeness?!?
Join us for a weekend of queertranstastic fun, learning, workshops, networking, revelry, and more! This is our third year hosting the Queer Gathering at Twin Oaks Community in rural central Virginia, and we invite you to come participate as an attendee, workshop presenter, and/or performer. The gathering will be a safe and supportive camping event for queer folks and allies of all ages to come together, skill share, make art, build community, dance, and organize.
This is a participant-led/co-created event, so while the organizing team will setup the event site and create a general schedule of activities, the content is largely up to YOU! There is opportunity to lead a workshop, DJ some of the dance party, bring your instruments to jam, offer an interest/identity-based meetup (BIPOC dinner, non-binary lunch, comic book breakfast, etc), and more! Just let us know ahead of time at [email protected] or post a card on the bulletin board when you get here!
Sharing Responsibility:
In our strongly individualistic society, sharing and acting in community is an inherently radical act. It also keeps our costs low so that the conference is financially accessible to more people. Participants are asked to do at least one 2-hr workshift during the weekend. Some tasks include (but are not limited to): set-up, registration, childcare, kitchen help, cleaning, and more. Please do your part in making this fabulous event possible!
Sliding Scale:
We suggest $80 to cover our costs for a whole weekend of camping, food, fun, and community organizing. However, we want to be as financially accessible as possible and are offering tickets on a sliding scale basis of $40-140. Please pay what you can! If you are experiencing extreme financial hardship, you may purchase a work trade ticket for $20 and sign up for 2 work shifts instead of one. No one will be turned away for lack of funds!

What/Who/Where is Twin Oaks?
“Curious about our host, Twin Oaks Community? Twin Oaks is an income sharing community of 96 adults and 10 children, ranging from tiny tiny just born all the way up to 80-something year old power houses! We make hammocks and tofu to earn our “bread,” as well as selling ornamental organic flowers, indexing books and growing organic seeds. All work at Twin Oaks is valued equally, and members contribute their weekly amount of required labor to the community in the ways that suit them best, from planning parties to planting trees and anything in between. We have 465 acres of land that includes 9 residences, a dining hall, an art/activities building, a tree house, a river, a pond, and a sauna- in addition to the beautiful conference site. We grow most of our own produce on a 4 acre garden, have a large herd of cattle for dairy and beef, chickens for eggs and meat, and take most of our meals together. Check out our website at www.twinoaks.org! Or, to learn more about the many, many intentional communities out there and search for one near you, visit the FIC website.”
